The following list gives the known works of Cardinal Muench: Pastoral Letters (25 entries; published by the Diocese of Fargo), books (3 entries), pamphlets (5 entries) and articles (356 entries). This original source of this list is Appendix I from Fr. Colman Barry’s book American Nuncio, Collegeville: Saint John’s University Press, 1969, pages 289 – 293. It is supplemented as additional writings become known.
When he was a student in Switzerland, Bishop Muench first learned about the practice of some European bishops issuing an annual pastoral letters. From the beginning of his episcopacy, he wrote an annual pastoral letters for the faithful of the Diocese of Fargo for the season of Lent. He maintained the practice even when he served in Europe. He ended only when he was elevated to the College of Cardinals.
In additional to the Lenten Pastoral of 1938, Bishop Muench issued an additional letter that year on mixed marriages.
